The Political System of the EU
With the signing of the EU Treaty in Maastricht in 1992 joined the
3-pillar model in force. It is a threefold division into the following
policy areas:

EG (European Communities): The European Communities
consist of the European Community (EG) and the European Atomic Energy
Community (EURATOM / EAEC). The EG is concerned in particular with the
European Single Market, Customs Union, to research and environmental
policy, consumer protection, the European Economic and Monetary Union,
immigration policy, social policy, health practices and consumer
protection. The European Communities have their own legal personality and
can even conclude contracts, and regulations and directives determine.

CASP (Common Foreign and Security Policy): The second
pillar in the EU, the CASP is an inter-governmental cooperation. Your task
is to define a framework for cooperation between the EU states. In foreign
policy takes care of the CASP for peace, human rights and promoting
democracy - outside of Europe. In the field of security policy is a common
approach against terrorism in Europe accelerated.

PJZS (police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters):
The third pillar deals with the fight against organized crime, which now
has spread in Europe - partly because of the open borders within Europe.
These open borders make even more intensive cooperation on asylum and
immigration policy is needed. Furthermore PJZS which deals with the police
and judicial cooperation in Europe.
